What Kylemore Abbey has to offer!
As we look forward to the summer period & the long evenings are once again upon us, we tend to put plans in place of BBQs, days at the beach and meeting up with friends – travelling to new places is also one that creeps up on us, some of which we may have already seen, and others we wish to tick off the bucket list in months to come.
Connemara falls into the bracket of places one should re-visit time & time again. The scenery, the ambiance & most importantly the people welcome you with open arms as they share their knowledge of the place they know so well.
The first area of interest I wish to share with you is Kylemore Abbey. The first sight you catch of this glorious monastery glistening against the water will leave you with a lasting memory of your time spent in the Connemara region. The photographs you can capture on your smartphone or camera are those to treasure for years to come.
Learn of tales of tragedy, romance, engineering initiatives and royal visits. It became home to a community of Benedictine Nuns in 1920 and has been renowned as a place of spirituality and education since.

Victorian Walled Gardens at Kylemore Abbey Connemara
One mile west of the main Abbey building are the 6-acre Victorian Walled Gardens, built by Mitchell Henry at the same time as the construction of Kylemore Castle between 1867 and 1871.
This garden was one of the last walled gardens to be built during the Victorian period in Ireland and is the only garden in Ireland that is located in the middle of a bog. The garden was so advanced for the time that it was even compared with Kew Gardens in London.
Gothic Church at Kylemore Abbey Connemara
A very beautiful Gothic Church was built in the memory of Margaret Henry and is sometimes referred to as the Taj Mahal of Ireland. It was designed by James Franklin Fuller, who also designed Ashford Castle. Work began on the church in 1877 but it was not completed until 1881.

Opening times: Open all year round. 7 days a week. Summer: mid-March to November, 09.30 – 17.30. (July & August 9.00 – 19.00). Winter: November to mid-March, 10.00 – 16.30.
