One of the hidden features about Galway’s location in the West of Ireland is its proximity to so many exquisite and historical attractions. The main issue you encounter is if you are only spending a short period of time; which road trips are you going to choose to get the maximum ‘Wild Atlantic Way‘ experience?

In the upcoming blog posts, I’m will inform you of the most popular road trips within touching distance of Galway. You can embrace some of these trips on our Galway-Clifden Citylink service. Nonetheless, you always have the option of planning or organising your own trip to make your Galway experience a special one – it’s your adventure!

Trip #1
Galway to Clifden via the Coast Road – absorbing Maam Cross and Oughterard.

This is a lovely trip to take in the Wild Atlantic Way as well as witnessing the finer sights of Galway’s gaeltacht region and areas of Connemara.
Head West from Galway city along the coast road and drive through lot’s of vibrant towns & villages including the renowned Salthill with it’s seaside promenade.

Trip #2
Galway to Kylemore Abbey & Killary Harbour

This is one of the finest road trips to undertake in the Connemara landscape, in addition, you also get to take in a number of film scene locations from the film “The Quiet Man”, starring John Wayne & Maureen O’Hara.

I recommend the N59 from Galway passing through Moycullen and Oughterard. The first location to embrace is the famous ‘Quiet Man Bridge’ not many miles from Oughterard.
At Maam Cross, you will also come across a replica of the Quiet Man Cottage if you feel like taking a few snaps on your camera.

Trip #3
Cong, Ashford Castle & Lough Nafooey

This is a highly recommended trip for “The Quiet Man” film fans as you can embrace a number of the filming sites in the village of Cong and on the grounds of Ashford Castle.

After departing Cong, travel towards Clonbur and then onto a tiny little place called Finny. There’s a great little pub here called “Larches” that’s worth a visit, it has to get the nod as one of my favourite views in Ireland overlooking the awesome Lough Nafooey. There’s just something magical about it. There was actually another film that shot a few scenes in this neck of the woods… Marley & Me starring Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson! If you’ve ever stumbled across the movie you may recall the couple take a trip to Ireland and there’s a scene where there car encounters difficulty with a flock of sheep.
